Hi, there! I’m Alejandra Solorio, a certified mobile notary in Los Angeles County, and I have an exciting story to share with you about my recent experience completing a mobile notary appointment at a detention facility. If you’re interested in learning more about how to get this service done for someone you care about or if you’re a notary looking to serve your community in detention facilities, keep reading!

Understanding Detention Facilities

First, let’s talk about detention facilities. As we all know, they’re designed to hold individuals who have been arrested or detained by authorities. These facilities can take many forms, including jails, prisons, detention centers, or immigration detention centers. They’re created to maintain social order by holding individuals who have violated laws or been accused of committing a crime.

What type of Documents Are typical to notarize in a detention facility?

When it comes to notarizing documents in a detention facility, you never know what you’re going to get! From legal documents to personal letters, every notarization request is unique and requires careful attention to detail. Here are a list of common documents you may enounter

  • Power of Attorneys
  • Property Release Forms
  • Impounded Car Release Form

Challenges You May Encounter

Notarizing in a detention facility is different than in a typical location. You may encounter various security checkpoints and driving required to get to the facility, which might take longer than usual. Also, it’s essential to have the correct facility and inmate information readily available. Once you’re at the facility, you’ll be expected to have everything prepared and from experience, it’s intimidating if you don’t. The inmate might not have sufficient identification, and you might need to request credible witnesses.

Setting the Scene

When I went to a detention facility on the outskirts of Los Angeles, I had to show the guard my notary journal, stamp, and identification (they specifically request your driver’s license). After the initial security check, I followed the guard’s directions to reach the building where my client was.

Completing the Notary Appointment

Once I reached the facility within the center, I gathered the booking information on a piece of paper since they don’t allow cell phones past the second security checkpoint. Once they verified my notary stamp, identification, and collected a security badge for me, I was allowed to enter the module where the signer was.

Then, I introduced myself and confirmed that he knew what he was signing, his identity, and where he needed to sign. Afterward, I gave the documents, pen, and ink pad to the guard so that he could sign the documents.

Reflections on the Experience

Overall, my experience notarizing at a detention facility signing taught me the importance of being prepared, staying informed, and understanding the specific requirements for notarizing at a detention facility. As a mobile notary, I’m happy to provide my services to anyone in the Los Angeles or South Bay area. I’m always happy to answer any questions you might have and help you get your documents notarized.

Conclusion

Completing a mobile notary appointment at a detention facility may present some challenges, but it is an opportunity to serve people in need. Be sure to stay informed and prepared for the appointment and understand the specific requirements for notarizing at a detention facility. It was a great first experience for me, and I’m looking forward to the next one.
